Zoe Restaurant & Lounge | FoodFelonies Review

Salut! I hope everyone is doing fine. I’m here again with another wonderful review of a food spot in Debrecen. The last one I did on the breakfast place was received really well so I decided to keep it coming with more reviews to help you as much as possible, make the best food choices when you go out to eat. Let’s get right into it!

Zoe Restaurant & Lounge as it’s now called was formerly known as John Bull Pub. It was recently refurbished and also had a name and menu change. It is the serving restaurant for Hotel Óbester.

Location: Péterfia ut 49, 4026, Debrecen, Hungary. Along the tram 1 line from Egyetem, it’s a one minute walk from the Honved stop, it’s in the same building as Hotel Óbester.

Opening hours: Weekdays and Weekends from 7.00 am to 11.00 pm

Now to the main thing. I’ll just start by saying this restaurant is an amazing place hands down one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Debrecen. The Ambiance of the place is just lovely, it was renovated as I said earlier so it feels very modern and has good lighting all around the restaurant. The service was really good, the main dish took about 15 minutes to get ready and the deserts for about 10 minutes. The waiter was kind enough to help me in deciding between two options for my main meal and he was very attentive to all of our needs. I say “our” because a second mouth is always needed to give the best possible non-bias reviews I can give of restaurants or food spots. The prices are very decent and the portion sizes are simply amazing for such good food.

Main Dishes:

1. Oven-roasted knuckle of pork with brand potato, Bavarian sauerkraut and brown sauce with sage and garlic (2990 Huf).

Rating: 4.3/ 5 – The individual parts of the dish were nice already but having it all combined together made the dish taste so much better and I really enjoyed it. The only disadvantage was that pork knuckle also was a bit too dry.

2. Spaghetti Carbonara with grilled striped of chicken breast (2190 Huf ).

Rating: 4.8/ 5 – This was hands down the star of the day. It is the best carbonara I have ever eaten. The chicken was so well marinated and grilled. The perfect amount of sauce that just soaked up the pasta. It should be Zoe’s signature dish. It would be very hard to find carbonara that beats this. I’ll 100% recommend it. There isn’t any negative thing to say about this beautiful plate of food.

Desserts:

1. Brownie with raspberry ragout and vanilla ice cream (990 Huf).

Rating: 3.2/5 – The desserts in general weren’t really the best. Not bad, but could be better (as with desserts usually in Debrecen). The brownie was too chocolatey and dense, it just had an overwhelming texture and taste to it. The top of the brownie wasn’t crispy as a good brownie should be. It also tasted like it had been baked a week ago. But the accompanying ice cream and whipped cream tasted amazing so it helped to lighten things up.

2. Pancakes in “American style” with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream (990 Huf).

Rating: 3.0/5 – Again the desserts drop it a bit low for Zoe. The pancake had a slightly tough interior, and a rough texture. It also had an overwhelming vanilla extract flavour to it. But the ice cream and whipped cream saved the day.

Ambience: 4.7/5

Customer Service: 4.6/5

Menu Variability: 4.8/5

TOTAL: 4.2/5

That’s it guys for Zoe Restaurant and Lounge. I hope you enjoy your time there if you decide to go and make the best choices from their menu. Bon Appétit!
