Hey guys! Guess who’s back? I’m bringing you wonderful people a very nice recipe today and it is my meatball recipe. Meatballs for me always come in very handy when I make them because their versatility is undefeated and that’s a huge plus for a university student like me who is constantly looking for meal ideas that are simple but extremely versatile. I hope you give this one a try. Fold up your sleeves, tie your aprons, wash your hands and let’s go meatballing!
Ingredients:
- 500g minced beef (lean)
- 1 medium-sized onion ( finely chopped)
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 2 eggs (beaten)
- 1 teaspoon salt ( or to taste)
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)
- 1 teaspoon basil (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
Method:
- Over low heat in a saucepan melt the butter, add the chopped onions and sauté till it turns translucent.
- Once the onions are translucent and softened, turn off the heat and set aside to cool down.
- To a large mixing bowl add all the ingredients including the chopped onions and mix very well till it all comes together. Once it comes together stop mixing as continuous mixing can lead to the meatballs becoming tough and that’s not the aim here. Tender meatballs is the goal here hehe.
- Form balls of equal sizes and layer them onto a baking tray lined with baking paper or aluminium foil that has been lightly greased to prevent sticking of the meatballs. This recipe makes exactly twenty meatballs.
- Bake in a 218 degree celsius oven for about 25 minutes or until the meatballs turn brown and are cooked through.
Once the meatballs balls are done let them cool slightly and you can enjoy them as you please eg. with tomato sauce and pasta, with gravy, on its own, however you deem fit. I had mine with gravy and mash potatoes (recipe in my last blog post). See pictures below.
This meatball recipe is considerably healthier than regular meatballs because lean beef mince was used, it has no pork, and it’s baked as opposed to fried. I just thought I’ll say that for the health-conscious ones out there but it certainly isn’t any less delicious.
